GOMES, MANUEL TEIXEIRA ), Portuguese politician, was born at Portimao, in the province of Algarve, in 1862, and educated at the University of Coimbra. From 1910-23 he was Portuguese minister to Great Britain, and in 1923 he be came president of the Portuguese republic. This office he resigned on Dec. 20, 1925, on grounds of health, being succeeded by Dr. Bernadino Machado.
