GUDEMAN, ALFRED ), American classical scholar, was born in Atlanta, Ga., on Aug. 26, 1862. He graduated at Columbia university in 1883 and in 1888 took his Ph.D. degree at the University of Berlin. From 1890 to 1893 he was reader in classical philology at Johns Hopkins university, from 1893 to 1902 professor in the University of Pennsylvania and from 1902 to 1904 professor in Cornell university. In 1904-16 he was assistant editor of the Thesaurus linguae Latinae—a unique distinction for an American Latinist, as was also the pub lication of his critical edition, with German commentary, of Tacitus's Agricola in 19o2 by the Weidmannsche Buchhandlung of Berlin.
