GRABAU, AMADEUS WILLIAM ), Amer ican palaeontologist, was born at Cedarburg, Wis., on Jan. 9, 187o, educated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Sc.B., 1896) and Harvard (Sc.D., 'goo). He served as assistant and instructor in palaeontology at the Massachusetts institute, 1892-97, was professor of geology at Rensselaer Polytechnic institute, Troy, N.Y., I 899–I 90I and then entered the faculty of Columbia university as lecturer, 19o1–o2, adjunct professor, 1902-05 and professor, 1905-19, of palaeontology. In 1919 he became professor of palaeontology at the National university in Peking, China, and also chief palaeontologist of the Chinese geological survey. He accompanied the Third Asiatic Expedition of the American Museum of Natural History as research asso ciate in palaeontology. The subjects of his special researches include North American Index Fossils (with H. W. Shimer, ; Palaeozoic Corals of China (192I) ; Ordovician Fossils of North China (1921) ; Stratigraphy of China, vol. i (1924-25) ; Silurian Fossils of Yunnan (19 2 6) .
