GREGORY VI., pope from Io45 to 1046. As Johannes Gratianus he had earned a reputation for learning and probity, and in he bought the pontificate from his unworthy godson Benedict IX. At a council held by the emperor Henry III. at Sutri in Io46, he was accused of simony, deposed and banished to Germany.
