GRIFFE, in architecture, a small ornament, generally tri angular, which fills the space between the round torus of a column base and the square corner of the plinth below ; sometimes known as a spur. The use of the grille is particularly characteristic of the later Romanesque period ; it usually takes the form of a group of leaves or a single curling leaf. Grotesque animals are occasionally found.
