GROUPER, a gen^ral name in America for certain sea-bass of the genus Epinephelus and allied genera. The commonest is the red grouper (E. morio) found in the Atlantic from Virginia to Brazil, a valuable food-fish, grey in colour, red about the snout. E. adscensionis, also known from Africa, is another important food-fish. To this group belongs the jewfish (q.v.). (See BASS.)
