HADITH. The name given to a compilation of the teachings and life of the prophet Mohammed, which with the Koran forms the supreme authority on matters connected with the Moham medan religion and legislation. This enormous literature of tra ditions, which was primarily meant for personal guidance and edification, has coloured the whole method and fabric of Moslem thought. (See ISLAM and MOHAMMEDAN LAW.)
