HALIBUT (Hippoglossius vulgaris), the largest of the flat fishes, reaching a length of io feet. It is found in the north Atlantic and north Pacific, and extends into the Arctic ocean, but is not certainly circumpolar. The eyes are on the right side, and the mouth is large ; the body is longer and less compressed than in other flat fishes. The halibut feeds on other fishes. It is a valued food fish, with very firm white flesh.
