HALICZ, a small town of Galicia, Poland, 7o m. by rail S.S.E. of Lwow (Lemberg). It is situated at the confluence of a small stream with the Dniester. In the neighbourhood are the ruins of the old castle, the seat of the ruler of the former king dom from which Galicia derived its name. Halicz, which is men tioned as early as 1113, was from 1141 to 1255 the residence of the Russian princes of that name. The town as is shown by excavations was then much larger. It probably suffered during the Mongol invasion of 1240. It has changed hands between Poland, Austria and Russia during its history.
