HUGHES, ARTHUR (1832-1915), English painter, was born in London on Jan. 27, 183 2. In 1846 he studied at the art school at Somerset House, under Alfred Stevens, and later entered the Royal Academy schools. He met Millais and Holman Hunt, and became one of the pre-Raphaelite group of painters. He also became widely known as an illustrator. He died at Kew Green on Dec. 22, 1915.
