HULL, CORDELL (1871– ) American statesman, was born in Overton Co. (now Pickett) Tennessee on October 2, 1871. He was admitted to the bar of Tennessee in 1891, elected to the House of Representatives in 1893, and to be judge in 1903. He served in the House of Representatives at Washington from 1907 to 1921—when he was active in developing the income and in heritance taxes—and from 1923 to 1931. In 1931 he was elected to the Senate but in 1933 was appointed Secretary of State by President Roosevelt in which capacity he attended the World Economic Conference in London. As a diplomatist he emphasizes the international rather than the isolationist point of view.
