IMMOLATION, the ceremonial rites performed in the prep aration of victims for sacrificial purposes. The human sacrifice or sati (suttee) of India consists of the immolation of a widow on the funeral pyre of her husband and the Khond sacrifice of the Meriah; the days preceding the sacrifice being devoted to increasing the sanctity of the victim by various processes of anointing and other ceremonies.
