INTAGLIO, a term applied to any recessed carving, in which no part projects beyond the original face of the material. In some cases, as in gem cutting, the entire relief is reversed. In others, as in some Egyptian wall carvings, the outline is suffi ciently incised so as to allow normal relief. This type is some times known as cavo rilievo or sunk relief.
