INGLIS, SIR JOHN EARDLEY WILMOT (1814 1862), British major-general, son of John Inglis, third bishop of Nova Scotia, was born in Nova Scotia on Nov. 15, 1814. In 1833 he joined the 32nd Foot, in which all his regimental service was passed. In 1837 he saw active service in Canada and in the Punjab (1848-49), being in command at the storming of Mooltan and at the battle of Gujarat. In 1857, on the outbreak of the In dian Mutiny, he was in command of his regiment at Lucknow. Sir Henry Lawrence being mortally wounded during the siege of the residency, Inglis continued the defence for 87 days against an overwhelming force. He was promoted to major-general and made K.C.B. He was, in 186o, given command of the British troops in the Ionian Islands. He died at Hamburg on Sept. 27, 1862.
