Juan De Jauregui

JAUREGUI, JUAN DE (1583-1641), Spanish poet, whose Rims (1618), a collection of graceful lyrics, is preceded by a controversial preface which attracted much attention on account of its outspoken declaration against culteranismo. His poem Orfeo (1624), however, is visibly influenced by Gongora, while a trans lation of the Pharsalia (begun before 1614 but not published until 1684) reveals jauregui as a complete convert to the new school.
