ANTARCTIC, the epithet applied to the region, including both the ocean and the lands, round the South Pole (Gr. avTi, opposite, and aprcros , the Bear, the northern constellation of Ursa Major). The Antarctic circle is drawn at 66° 3o' S., but polar conditions of climate, etc., extend considerably north of the area thus enclosed. (See ANTARCTIC REGIONS.)
