ANZIN, a suburb of Valenciennes, north France, depart ment of Nord, on the Scheldt. Pop. (1931) 16,090. It is the centre of the French "house-coal" region, mining going back to 1717. Metallurgical industries include iron and copper found ing and the manufacture of steam engines, machinery, chain cables and a great variety of heavy iron goods. There are also glass-works and breweries. The region was much damaged dur ing the World War.
