APSINES, of Gadara, a Greek rhetorician, (c. A.D. 190-250). He was the friend of Philostratus, the author of the Lives of the Sophists, who speaks of his accurate memory. Two rhetorical treatises by him are extant—a handbook of rhetoric largely taken from the Rhetoric of Longinus, and a smaller work on Proposi tions maintained figuratively.
