ARCA MUSARITHMICA, an instrument or machine for the composing of music mechanically, by the arranging and com bining of notes according to rule in various ways; described by Athanasius Kircher in his Musurgia universalis, Rome, 166o. Samuel Pepys possessed such a "composition box," which is still to be seen in the Pepys library at Magdalene college, Cambridge.
