ARCHER-FISH, the name given to several small fish of the Chaetodontidae on account of their habit of projecting water from their mouths, thus wetting insects and knocking them into the water. The best-known species, Toxotes jaculator, inhabits the fresh waters of Java and other Indo-Malayan islands. It reaches a length of 6 to yin. and can throw a jet of water 5 or 6ft. An other species, Clielmon rostratus, also inhabits Java.
