ARCHIVE, a term (gener ally used in the plural) properly denoting the building in which are kept the records, charters, and other papers belonging to any state, community, or family (Lat. archivum, a translitera tion of Gr. apxEiov, an official building), but now generally ap plied to the documents them selves (see RECORD).
