ARDRES, ancient small town of northern France, in the de partment of Pas-de-Calais, iom. south-south-east of Calais. Pop. (1931) 1,211. It was occupied by Francis I. at the time of his historic meeting with Henry VIII. in 1.52o, at the "Field of the Cloth of Gold" at Balinghem, 21m. to the west. Ardres has a 14th century church and an important cattle market.
