ARDROSSAN, seaport, municipal and police burgh, Ayr shire, Scotland, 291m. S.W. from Glasgow by the L.M.S.R. Pop. (1931) 6,888. Hugh, 12th Earl of Eglinton, began the harbour and town in 18o6, intending to connect it with Glasgow by canal ; his successor completed the scheme on a reduced scale. The docks have since been extended. The exports are coal and iron from collieries and iron-works in the neighbourhood ; and the imports ores, timber, and general goods. Shipbuilding and fish eries are carried on. The town is under provost and council.
