ARNSTADT, a town in Thuringia, Germany, 11m. S. of Erfurt. Pop. (1933) 22,024. It dates from the 8th century and was bought in 1306 by the counts of Schwarzburg, who lived here till 1716. The Liebfrauenkirche is Romanesque (12th and 13th centuries) . The town hall dates from 1561. There are copper mines and tepid springs in the neighbourhood. The industries are partly based on the mines, but also include machine making, chemical and dye works. There is trade in wheat, leather, seeds and cattle.
