ARTEMOVSK (formerly Bakhmut), a town and railway junction in the Artemovsk province of the Ukrainian S.S.R. Lat. N., long. 38° E. Pop. (1926) 37,354. Its salt springs and salt mines have been worked since the 17th century; 403,00o tons were produced in 1925. Coal, alabaster and quicksilver are mined, and steel rails manufactured.
