ASTI (anc. Hasta), episcopal see, Piedmont, Italy, province of Alessandria, on the Tanaro, 2 2m. W. by rail from Alessandria. Pop. (1931) town, 23,65o; commune, 49,062. Remains include 8th-century baptistery (S. Giovanni), Ilth-century octagonal baptistery (S. Pietro), mediaeval towers, and a fine 14th-century Gothic cathedral. It was the birthplace of the poet Vittorio Alfieri. It is now famous for its sparkling wine (Asti spumante).
