ATTACK is a word used in various senses in musical termi nology. Thus in the form attacca (Ital.) it is a direction to pro ceed without pause to the next movement or section of a com position. "Good attack" applied to a performance signifies a performance characterized by spirit, decision and good ensemble; a use of the term allied with the French chef d'attaque as a des ignation for the leader of an orchestra. Attacco (Ital.), in turn, is a term applied to a short phrase or episodic subject in a fugue.
