AUGUSTA BAGIENNORUM, chief town of Ligurian Bagienni, identical with modern Bene Vagienna, on the upper course of the Tanaro, about 35m. S. of Turin, Italy. It remained a tribal centre in the reorganization and replanning under Augus tus, whose name it bears.. There are remains of public buildings, in concrete faced with small stones, with bands of brick at intervals, an amphitheatre with major axis 39of t. and minor axis 3o5ft., a theatre with stage 133ft. in length, and near it the foundations of what was probably a basilica, an open space (no doubt the forum), an aqueduct, baths, also one of the city gates, flanked by two towers 2 2 feet square.
