BACAU, a town of Rumania, capital of department of same name. Pop. (1930), about 31,26o, including many Jews. Bacau lies in the foothills of the Carpathians, on the river Bistrita, 5 miles above its junction with the Pruth, and on the main Czer• nowitz-Ploesti line. A branch railway runs to Piatra, in the Car pathians. Bacau is a modern town and important commercial centre with manufactures of paper, cloth and clothing, timber and petroleum. There is a chamber of commerce and industry at Bacau.
