BAILEY, an open space enclosed by a fortification, sometimes known as the "ward." If more than one line of fortification is present there will be an inner and an outer bailey. The word per sists chiefly in proper names, such as the Old Bailey in London whose name is derived from its situation in one of the baileys that was a part of the old city fortifications.
