ASTON, HUGH (early i6th century), an old English musi cian, of considerable historical importance. He was one of the first composers of purely instrumental works, and is further re garded by some authorities as the actual inventor of the instru mental variation form. He composed also a number of choral works (masses, motets, and so forth) some of which have been preserved.
