BAIRD, JOHN LOGIE (1888— ), British inventor, was born Aug. 13, 1888, in Helensburgh, Scotland and was educated at Larchfield Academy and Glasgow University. He served apprenticeship as an electrical engineer but abandoned engineer ing for a business career. In 1922 owing to ill health he gave up active business and retired to Hastings where he took up the study of television, his researches finally enabling him to give in Janu ary, 1926, a demonstration of television which has been claimed to be the first demonstration of true television ever given.
