AUENBRUGGER, LEOPOLD Viennese physician, was born at Graz, Steyermark, on Nov. 19, 1722. He studied at Vienna and was placed in charge of the Spanish mili tary hospital and the hospital of the Holy Trinity. His New Invention for Discovering Obscure Thoracic Diseases by Percus sion of the Chest (1762) first introduced percussion as a means of detecting chest diseases but his method was not taken up until after his death, being introduced largely by the influence of the physician Piorry (d. 1879).
