BALDWIN, MATTHIAS WILLIAM American inventor and manufacturer, was born in Elizabethtown, N.J., on Dec. Io, 1795. He was trained as a jeweller but, being encouraged to engage in the manufacture of locomotives, eventu ally founded the Baldwin Locomotive Works (q.v.). He died in Philadelphia on Sept. 7, 1866.
