ARNOLD, SAMUEL (Ii40-1802), English composer, was born in London and educated at the Chapel Royal, though his subsequent activities were mainly associated with the stage. He was indeed little more than 20 when he was appointed official composer to Covent Garden Theatre, and between 1765 and 1802 he wrote as many as 43 operas, after-pieces and panto mimes. He also composed numerous oratorios and in 1793 be came organist of Westminster Abbey, where he was buried. His collection of Cathedral Music, once much esteemed, is now less highly thought of on account of its serious omissions.
