ASTLEY, SIR JOHN DUGDALE, BART. English soldier and sportsman, was in the army from 1848 to 18J9. He married an heiress in 1858 and thenceforth devoted himself to horse-racing and sport. He lost large sums of money on the turf, where he was known as "the mate." He was Conservative M.P. for North Lincolnshire 1874-188o and died on Oct. Io, 1894.
