AVOCA or OVOCA, VALE OF, a mountain glen in south east Wicklow, Ireland. The small rivers Avonmore and Avonbeg unite to form the Ovoca river, flowing south and south-east to the Irish sea at Arklow. The vale's beauty was sung by Thomas Moore in his Irish Melodies; it is narrow and densely wooded, but is somewhat marred by the presence of lead and copper mines, and by the Great Southern railway, on which Ovoca station, mid way in the vale, is 424m. south of Dublin. At Avondale, Charles Stewart Parnell was born.
