BANFF, a popular mountain resort in the southwestern part of Alberta, Canada. Its population according to the census of 1931 was 2,519. Situated on the main line of the Canadian Pa cific railway, it is the principal station for the Rocky Mountain Park of Canada, which has an area of 2,585 square miles. The town stands at an altitude of about 4,94o feet, 41 miles east of Lake Louise, with which it shares a large tourists' patronage. Be sides the marvelous scenic beauty of the region the town's chief attractions are its two government controlled hot sulphur springs. It offers excellent hotel accommodation and camping grounds and has a large sanatorium. In recent years also its annual winter sports carnival has drawn many visitors from the whole of the upper prairie country.
