BAR, a town in the Ukrainian S.S.R. on a tributary of the Bug. Lat. 49° 5' N., long. 27° 38' E. Pop. (1926) 9,431. It was rebuilt by Sigismund I. of Poland after its destruction by the Tatars in 1452 and renamed Bar (formerly Rov) by his wife Bona Sforza, born in Bari, Italy. It was captured by the Turks in 1672, but re-taken 1699.
