BAR, a town in the Ukrainian S.S.R. on a tributary of the Bug. Lat. 49° 5' N., long. 27° 38' E. Pop. (1926) 9,431. It was rebuilt by Sigismund I. of Poland after its destruction by the Tatars in 1452 and renamed Bar (formerly Rov) by his wife Bona Sforza, born in Bari, Italy.
