BASEMENT, in a building, a storey partly below the sur rounding ground level ; more loosely the ground storey of a building when that storey is of subsidiary importance. The term is applied specifically when the exterior treatment of this storey is simpler or more rugged than that of the superstructure. The basement then serves the function of a pedestal.
