BATESVILLE, a city of Arkansas, U.S.A., in the foot-hills of the Ozarks, 9om. N.N.E. of Little Rock, on the White river and the Missouri Pacific railroad; the county seat of Inde pendence county. The population in 193o was 4,484. Manganese is mined, and there are marble quarries in the vicinity. Water power is available. The principal manufactures are flour, staves and excelsior. Arkansas college, a Presbyterian institution founded in 1872, is the oldest chartered college in the State.
