BATHGATE, municipal and police burgh, Linlithgowshire, Scotland, 19m. W. by S. of Edinburgh by the L.N.E. railway. Pop. (1931) 50,097. Limestone, coal, ironstone, shale and fireclay are worked. Silver also was once mined and the old workings have been reopened in recent years. The manufactures include paraf fin, paper, and whisky, and there are iron and steel works. The burgh is a considerable centre for agricultural produce ; it formed the dowry of Marjory, Robert Bruce's daughter, who married Walter, hereditary steward of Scotland, in 1315.
