BATHOS, properly depth, the bottom or lowest part of any thing. The current usage for a descent "from the sublime to the ridiculous" is due to Pope's satire "Bathos" (Miscellanies,
28), "the art of sinking in poetry." The title was a travesty of Longinus' essay, On the Sublime.
