BEDFORD, a city of Indiana, U.S.A., Tom. south by west of Indianapolis ; in the heart of the Indiana limestone district; the county seat of Lawrence county. It is on Federal highway 5o, and is served by the Monon route and the Chicago, Indianapolis and Louisville railways. The population in 192o was 9,076 and was 13,208 in 193o by the Federal census. "Bedford limestone" is one of the most highly prized building materials in the country. It is shipped to all parts of the United States and Canada and to some European countries, and has been used for public buildings in many cities. Bedford was settled in 1825, and incorporated as a city in 1889.
