BELTON, a city of Texas, U.S.A., 55m. N.E. of Austin; the county-seat of Bell county. It is on Federal highway 81, and is served by the Santa Fe and the Missouri-Kansas-Texas railways. The population in 193o was 3,779. Cotton, grain, honey, and hogs are raised in the surrounding country. The city has cotton gins and compresses, cottonseed-oil and cotton-yarn factories, and a poultry-dressing plant. It is the seat of Baylor College for Women, opened at Independence in 1851 as the women's section of Baylor university (chartered in 1845 by the Republic of Texas) and removed to Belton in 1886.
