BETTER BUSINESS BUREAUS are maintained in more than 6o principal cities of the U.S.A. and Canada to protect both business and the community from unfair, misleading, or fraudu lent advertising and selling. The National Better Business Bureau in New York city concerns itself with national advertising; the local bureaus are independent and non-profit corporations but co-ordinate their functions through the National Association of Better Business Bureaus. In a typical year the bureaus collectively entertained 138,00o complaints of consumers and 430,00o in quiries; 12,000 cases were referred to governmental agencies.
