BISCHOFSWERDA, a town in the Land of Saxony, 22M. E. of Dresden, in the governmental division of Bautzen. Pop. (1933) 9,346. There are factories for cloth and artificial flowers; also glass-wprks and potteries; and in the neighbourhood large granite quarries. It is famous as the scene of a battle, May 1 2 , 1813, between the French and the Allies, after Napoleon's retreat from Moscow. It was the residence of Benno, bishop of Meissen, in the th century, and the "Bishop's Road" still runs from here to Meissen.
