BITHUR, a town in the Cawnpore district of the United Provinces of India, 12 m. N.W. of Cawnpore city. Pop. (1931) 2,072. The last of the peshwas, Baji Rao, was banished to Bithur, and it was his adopted son, the Nana Sahib, who became the villain of the Cawnpore tragedy in 1857. The town was captured by Havelock on July 19, 1857, when the Nana's palaces were destroyed.
