BLENNY, a name generally given to any fish of the Blen nioid group, in which the pelvic fins are jugular in position and have the rays reduced in number. The wolf-fish, like the viviparous blenny (Zoarces) and the kelp-fishes (Clinidae), is a blennioid. The family Blenniidae contains numerous small species in tropical and subtropical seas, mostly shore-fishes that lurk under stones and weeds in shallow pools. The shanny (Blennius pholis) is the commonest British species.
