It was chosen for the convalescence of King George in 1929, hence the adjective "Regis." The town possesses a pier and promenade, a theatre, assembly rooms, and numerous convalescent homes. The church of the mother parish of South Bersted is Norman and Early English, and retains a fresco of the i6th century.
